Safety Specialist, Security Specialist (4/28/08)
I have listed below two vacancies I currently have here in my department at the District of Columbia – Water and Sewer Authority (DC-WASA). As a friend I would like you to share this information with someone you know that may be interested in a job opportunity with the District of Columbia – Water and Sewer Authority (DC-WASA). We have a great organization with excellent benefits. (Check out our website for details.) I also believe our program will afford qualified candidates an excellent opportunity to grow and learn from a well qualified and experienced safety and security staff. If you or someone else has an interest please have them visit our website or give me a call for additional information. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
The positions are Safety Specialist and a Security Specialist. Both positions will be working in Washington DC, at the Blue Plains AWWTP in our department main office. The safety specialist will report directly to me, and the security specialist will report to the security manager. For specific details visit our website http://www.dcwasa.com/ and click on jobs. This location will show you all the job vacancies currently available at WASA. At the website you can fill out an application and submit it on line.
- Safety Specialist – grade 16 ($53,472 - $89,120)
- Security Specialist – grade 15 ($45,337 - $75,562)
About eight months ago my department was reorganized to include Security. The department consists of seventeen (17) staffers with responsibility for Safety; Health; Environmental Safety; Contractor Safety; Emergency Response and Planning and now Security. (We also have a 50+ contract security staff.) Our current department consists of several members of staff holding professional certifications in their respective fields. We believe we are a very progressive department with full support and cooperation from top management. As a member of a team working in Washington DC, we frequently are called upon to work with District, Federal and congressional staff on a variety of matters within the scope of our responsibilities. Within the past year we have worked with the Homeland Security Congressional sub-committee staff, Homeland Security Agency, various law enforcement officials at all levels, major universities on safety and health issues and occasionally, foreign nations.
For Your Information - here is some background on DC-WASA:
WASA is a 10 year old agency formed by an act of the US Congress in April of 1996, as an independent quasi-government entity providing water distribution services for the residents of the District of Columbia. (Note we do not produce or treat our own water. We buy processed and treated water from the Army Corp of Engineers and then we sell and distribute it to the DC residents and some parts of Northern Virginia.) WASA also provides wastewater treatment for the Metropolitan Washington DC region. This includes the surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia, plus DC. WASA’s budget is approved annually by the U.S. Congress and not the city. Although, WASA is an independent agency we work very closely with District of Columbia city agencies.
As a member of the Department of Safety and Security you will be afforded the opportunity to work with some of the top individuals in the area. The Safety Specialist’s primary responsibility is the development and implementation of proactive safety and loss prevention concepts for a workforce consisting of 1000 employees. Each member of the Safety staff is assigned specific work groups and in essence serves as that work group’s safety representative. The safety representative is responsible for all aspects of the safety program within their assigned area. The overall WASA Safety Program is guided by a WASA Board of Directors approved Comprehensive Safety Plan. The plan establishes goals, performance measures and how we will carry out our responsibilities in a consistency manner throughout the organization. Members of the safety staff have an opportunity to make major contributions to our program along with their normal duties of: facility and job site inspections/audits; training; reviewing of plans of new building designs and construction to recommend safety enhancements; oversight of hazardous materials use and storage; regulatory compliance; preparing safety statistical performance overviews for various management teams; and investigating losses to develop and implement corrective measures.
The Security Specialist reports directly to the Security Manager and will also be responsible for specifically assigned facilities and work operations. Currently, there are four security specialist positions, supplemented with a 50+ contract security force responsible for protecting WASA facilities located throughout the District of Columbia. (We also have a few facilities in Virginia and Maryland.) The Security Specialist will assist in developing a Comprehensive Security Program, for our Board’s approval and developing state of the art security measures to protect WASA personnel, facilities and operations.
