Description: Serves as the individual responsible for System-wide development and coordination of employee health safety programs.

Recognizes, evaluates and monitors environmental hazards that might impair the health of employees or the efficiency of work operations. Develops and recommends corrective actions to eliminate, control or reduce occupational health concerns.

Priority Initiative for Position: Serves as the program administrator responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Inova Health System Respirator Protection Program in accordance with the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard.

Duties include:

About eight months ago my department was reorganized to include Security. The department consists of seventeen (17) staffers with responsibility for Safety; Health; Environmental Safety; Contractor Safety; Emergency Response and Planning and now Security. (We also have a 50+ contract security staff.) Our current department consists of several members of staff holding professional certifications in their respective fields. We believe we are a very progressive department with full support and cooperation from top management. As a member of a team working in Washington DC, we frequently are called upon to work with District, Federal and congressional staff on a variety of matters within the scope of our responsibilities. For Your Information - here is some background on DC-WASA:

WASA is a 10 year old agency formed by an act of the US Congress in April of 1996, as an independent quasi-government entity providing water distribution services for the residents of the District of Columbia. (Note we do not produce or treat our own water. We buy processed and treated water from the Army Corp of Engineers and then we sell and distribute it to the DC residents and some parts of Northern Virginia.) WASA also provides wastewater treatment for the Metropolitan Washington DC region. This includes the surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia, plus DC. WASA’s budget is approved annually by the U.S. Congress and not the city. Although, WASA is an independent agency we work very closely with District of Columbia city agencies.

As a member of the Department of Safety and Security you will be afforded the opportunity to work with some of the top individuals in the area. The Safety Specialist’s primary responsibility is the development and implementation of proactive safety and loss prevention concepts for a workforce consisting of 1000 employees. Each member of the Safety staff is assigned specific work groups and in essence serves as that work group’s safety representative. The safety representative is responsible for all aspects of the safety program within their assigned area. The overall WASA Safety Program is guided by a WASA Board of Directors approved Comprehensive Safety Plan. The plan establishes goals, performance measures and how we will carry out our responsibilities in a consistency manner throughout the organization. This position is in the Risk Management Department and reports to the Corporate Safety Manager. Some functional duties include:

Providing expertise on all health and safety issues to the North Region.
Serving as a resource to the Senior Vice President for the Region, and to individual Branch Managers and Branch Safety Officers.
Providing oversight and assistance in incident investigations.
Implementing proactive programs designed to reduce injuries and illnesses, and workers' compensation costs.
Maintaining regional compliance with safety procedures and policies.
Coordinating and conducting safety audits.
Implementing Corporate safety initiatives including defensive driving, subcontractor prequalification system, and Behavior-Based Safety Program.
Providing safety training programs to ensure employee knowledge and understanding of regulations and requirements.
Promptly addressing enforcement issues and incidents with the assistance of Corporate Risk Management and Legal Department.
Interacting and working with other Regional Safety Coordinators to facilitate an effective health and safety program for all ATC.

Candidates should possess: A minimum of 7 years safety and health related management experience; Work history that includes environmental, engineering, or construction; strong analytical and technical skills; Strong verbal and written communication skills; Use of Microsoft Office Software (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications); Knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial hygiene methodology; Proven ability to work with all levels of management and hourly workforce; Ability to drive change, innovation, and implementation of corrective actions; and Proven track record of adding value through safety and health programs.

Candidates must have a BS/BA in a health, safety, engineering, or environmental management curriculum and possess, or be working towards attaining, the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygiene (CIH) professional designations.

Industrial Safety Specialist (10/2/07)

ATK Space is seeking an experienced industrial safety specialist to support its growing aerospace hardware and spacecraft integration services programs. The successful candidate will work independently to perform a wide range of tasks related to occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance. Responsibilities may include: development of health and safety requirements related to ATK’s industrial and laboratory activities; performance of job safety analyses and implementation of resulting recommendations; evaluate ATK operations for environmental impact and verify compliance to federal and state environmental requirements; recommendation and development of appropriate safety and environmental training programs; periodic audit of work areas to verify compliance with health and safety requirements; investigation of safety or environmental incidents and “close calls” for cause and corrective action; oversight of ATK’s subcontractors’ health and safety programs. A working knowledge of applicable federal regulations for occupational safety and environmental compliance is required; familiarity with corresponding Maryland state regulations is highly desirable. The candidate will frequently interface with project, customer and regulatory agency personnel at all levels, and must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written documentation.

Position requires a demonstrated competence in occupational safety and environmental disciplines, and a minimum of 3 years experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related technical field is required; additional directly-related experience may be considered in lieu of a technical degree. Plant Safety & Training Coordinator (10/2/07)

Basic Function: Directs the PET NA safety management system for the Plant. Is a key resource and drives the safety, fire, environmental, industrial hygiene, construction, training, and security elements. Works with and supports plant management in developing, implementing and monitoring the plant’s overall safety programs and initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs internal (employees) and external (contractors, visitors, etc.) training.
Acts as the Level 2 Administrator & schedules Computer Based Training (CBT)
Performs periodic safety-related audits/inspections, prepares action plans and ensures that appropriate personnel accountable for corrections, are completed.
Facilitates the incident investigation process from beginning to resolution with appropriate management team.
Reviews and prepares the incident investigation report for inputting into the database.
Prepares monthly training reports of employee participation.
Chairs the monthly plant safety committee(s).
Works closely with the Corporate Safety Manager in Manchester.
Monitors contractors and construction activities as they apply to safety.
Performs risk assessments and job safety analysis as needed.
Presents safety-related information at monthly shift meetings.
Monitors the corporate and/or plant safety incentive programs.
Collaborates with appropriate department personnel to resolve identified hazards.
Maintains and updates pertinent information in Material Safety Data Sheet books located within the plant.
Acts as the liaison during external safety, fire and environmental audits, including OSHA inspections.
Ensures annual OSHA compliance training is completed for all employees.
Maintains the OSHA 300 log and posts, annually, as required.
Coordinates onsite efforts with W/C carrier and Human Resources Manager.
Performs other safety-related duties/assignments as deemed necessary or requested by the Plant Manager or Corporate Safety Manager.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science degree from four-year college in safety management, safety engineering or equivalent.

Experience:

Minimum of three years experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the plastics industry.
Ergonomic analysis and application helpful.
Construction safety awareness helpful
Possess professional written / verbal communication skills.
Ability to effectively communicate with plant and corporate personnel.
Computer literate
Demonstrate a working knowledge and application of various software applications (e.g. WORD, XCEL, PPT, etc.)

Certifications: Prefer CSP or CIH, but willing to achieve within 3 years of hire date.

To hold for inspection any product or process that you determined does not meet with Amcor or regulatory safety standards.
