Innovations in Safety — It takes you!

September 16 - Careers in Federal Safety and Health

Come out and hear from a panel of federal agency directors as they describe how Federal agencies administer safety and health programs including safety related career opportunities in the Federal government.

Where: Department of Commerce Building, 14th and Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20230. Across from Ronal Reagan Bldg and near the Federal Triangle metro stop.

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm.

There will be no lunch served at this meeting but plan on meeting a colleague or two for lunch after on your own. Also, all Federal employees must show their IDs at the security desk. If you are not a Federal employee, you MUST pre-register with your name and company name at least one week prior to the meeting. Please rsvp to Tom Trauger at the email above. All attendees must produce a photo ID at the security desk. Space is limited to the first 40 people to register.

American Society of Safety Engineers' National Capital Chapter Announces 2010 Top Safety Professional Award

Washington, D.C. (June 22, 2010) – Daniel Marsick, from Springfield, Virginia , received the Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) Award from the National Capital Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). The SPY Award acknowledges members who have demonstrated superior work and dedication to the advancement of the safety profession. Chosen members are nominated by their peers, region or chapter members. This award recognizes Mr. Marsick’s determination and hard work in advancing the safety profession by educating government officials and fellow workers on workplace safety.

Mr. Marsick is employed by the U.S. Department of Energy and works in the Office of Worker Safety and Health Policy. He has worked for DOE for the past 19 years. Prior to that, he worked at OSHA for 14 years. Mr. Marsick is helped create the DOE handbooks on Behavior Based Safety, Chemical Management and Air Suits. He has also known for his knowledge and expertise in nanotechnology, lasers, respirators, hazard communications, confined spaces, fall protection, ISO 14000 and radiation safety. Mr. Marsick is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and has a Ph.D in Chemistry from American University. Mr. Marsick has been a member of ASSE since 2001. He is also a Past-President of the Potomac Chapter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Mr. Marsick also teaches environmental safety and health at the University of Maryland, University College.

Its 32,000 members manage, supervise, research and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education. March 2010 WISE Member Spotlight

Carol Woodruff manages business development for Sandler Occupational Medicine Associates, Inc. (SOMA) in Gaithersburg, MD. She has extensive experience in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety. She has spent the majority of her careerconsulting with private industry, manufacturers and government agencies regarding OSHA compliance. Her specialty is in the identification of client needs and the appropriate delivery of industrial hygiene and occupational health services to ensure compliance and growth of client programs.

Woodruff worked with consultants and government agencies post-9/11 on projects from Ground Zero in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. She also coordinated the analysis of both biological and non-biological samples for anthrax in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Woodruff has helped raise significant donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of breast cancer research. She is currently serving her second year as secretary for ASSE’s National Capital Chapter and is a member of Women in Safety Engineering (WISE). She is also a member of AIHA’s Occupational and Environment Medicine Committee.
